Oil Majors Evacuate Non-Essential Staff in Gulf

Rig Zone -- Chevron Corp. said Friday it has begun evacuating nonessential workers from its oil and gas operations in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico as Tropical Storm Isaac moves toward the area.

Chevron didn't say from which offshore operations it had pulled employees. Production had not yet been affected, the company said.

The storm is currently south of Hispaniola in the Caribbean and is expected to reach the U.S Gulf of Mexico Monday.

Apache Evacuating Nonessential Staff From Eastern U.S. Gulf
Apache Corp. said Friday it has begun pulling nonessential staff from its oil and gas operations in the eastern side of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, as Tropical Storm Isaac heads toward the area.

Martinman: The Rig Zone is "the Left"? Someone needs to stop sniffing the gasoline...

LOL. There seems to be several here who have been busy worshiping and sniffing gasoline.

This is nothing more than an article posted by the Left to implement more scare tactics and hope for speculation so they can point to the fact that we need to explore more 'green' alternatives. This article should tell us the exact opposite- that oil companies are actually using precautions and making responsible decisions, except of the direct impact on our wallets.

Keep the oil flowing until it is necessarily required to shut it down due to the hurricane.

Well, we know it would never be about price manipulation...

Why announce that your "planning" to do something, before you've actually made the decision ?

I'm sure this had nothing to do about announcing "plans" before the commodity markets closed for the weekend. I mean, it's not like the Tropical Storm isn't forecast to even be that far north into the Gulf until Wednesday...

"Apache Corp. said Friday it has begun pulling nonessential staff from its oil and gas operations in the eastern side of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, as Tropical Storm Isaac heads toward the area.

Apache spokesman John Roper called it "a precautionary measure."

"BP said Friday it has begun evacuating all workers from its Thunder Horse platform in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and will suspend oil and natural gas production there. It is also evacuating non-essential workers from offshore facilities in the central Gulf."

-----

Really?

This is the eastern Gulf?

Thunder Horse, 150m southeast of New Orleans
(large black dot above the third "i" in Mississippi Canyon)

If you look at this map of the oil platforms currently in the Gulf of Mexico, then compare it to the forecast track, you'll question why as well:

Gulf of Mexico Oil Platforms

I'm curious. Are they having the workers return to New Orleans via rowboat?

Wonder why they haven't used all those profits to invest in robotic operations. We have them on Mars and those projects seem successful. Why not on oil rigs and other repetitively dangerous operations. Build a hurricane proof rig with robotic operations and a control valve on the well that actually works; then, shut it down via a land based control room. Didn't we do this with the space shuttles ? Where did all that technology go ?

now if you had a pipeline from canada you could make up any shortfall without having to raise prices. hmmm maybe there is another reason it didn't get built!

If we were drilling in Alaska, this wouldn't be a big issue. Very few hurricanes hit ANWR.

"evacuating nonessential workers" = $0.20 per gallon rise, evacuating all workers = $0.50 per gallon rise, actual damage = $1.50 per gallon rise!!! They WILL make lots of money!
