Norht Dakota Oil Boom creates Education Boom

PBS -- Williston (N.D.) now boasts a one percent unemployment rate and some of the best economic numbers in the nation. The average oil worker is estimated to make more than $90,000 a year. Many of these jobs require no more than a high school education.

The massive influx of new residents has created housing and schooling headaches for a town that was home to just 12,000 a few years ago but could grow to 100,000 in the coming decade, according to Williston's economic development office.

If the town does grow to 100,000 in ten years, then they have time to plan their growth. With less than 1% unemployment, that projection might not be too far off.

Any school buildings that are constructed should be usable as something else in case (or when) the oil boom is over.

These people need some good planning up front. Support things that can be used for other things after the oil is gone.

It is not likely that this town will survive very well after the oil is extracted from the area.

Does PBS have a spell checker? My kids learn from your programming. Shame on you.

There is a big boom now, but in 10-15 years, it will be a ghost town wasteland.
