Despite Attention, Public's Opinion on Fracking Doesn't Budge

Albany Bureau -- -- The hot-button issue has spurred rallies, full-page advertisements, plenty of radio and television spots and too many headlines to count.

Despite all of it, the public's opinion of hydraulic fracturing in New York has barely budged.

A Quinnipiac University poll released this week found 44 percent of New York voters oppose drilling for natural gas in the resource-rich Marcellus Shale region, compared to 43 percent in favor -- an even split given the slight margin of error.

Since August 2011, the shift has only been by no more than four percentage points, with various Siena College surveys finding a similarly consistent split.

My take on this is that there is an urban/rural divide on this issue. Policy makers have banned fracking in New York based on environmental scare tactics which are not borne out by scientific evidence, to the detriment of people in rural areas of NY who are in deep financial trouble, while a few miles away across the state line, gas development has been the solution to the crisis in Pennsylvania. The radical environmental position, however, seems to get a lot of traction in non-rural areas, which, in New York, are home to a huge majority of the population.
