EIA: Rise in gasoline inventories offset decrease in crude inventories

GasBuddy Blog -- The Energy Information Administration released its weekly report on the condition of petroleum inventories in the United States today.

Here are some highlights:

CRUDE INVENTORIES:
Crude oil inventories decreased by 4.7 million barrels to a total of 378.2 million barrels. At 378.2 million barrels, inventories are 22.7 million barrels above last year (6.4%) and are above the upper limit of the average range.

GASOLINE INVENTORIES:
Gasoline inventories increased by 2.8 million barrels to 207.7 million barrels. At 207.7 million barrels, inventories are down 4.0 million barrels, or 1.9% lower than last year. Here's how individual regions and their gasoline inventory fared last week: East Coast (+1.1mb); Midwest...

I don't understand. Oil still comes out of the ground the same as 50 years ago. Why dose it cost so much today.

Crude oil inventories are down but this is countered by the fact that refined inventories are up. My guess is this is no reason for prices to increase as the companies still have more then before.

It takes crude oil to make gasoline, so if its not replenished, it would reduce it.
